Mirage
And what’s a desert without a Mirage? Though it’s recently had some troubles with a massive fire, reconstruction is underway and has affected few rooms in the overall hotel area. While the exterior of the Mirage is old Vegas, the interior is sleek, New Age elegance. The Asian dÈcor is some of the classiest of the hotels on the strip, and also the design of Steve Wynn, the resort’s owner. While the theme used to be specifically tropical, the more subdued look works well to attract both high end customers and the everyday traveler.
The main attraction of the Mirage is a large volcano at the center of the entrance way. This volcano ‘erupts’ on a nightly basis, much to the enjoyment of the guests and other travelers in the area. And truthfully, it’s a pretty amazing show, so if you can, find out the times that the volcano is going to erupt and head over.
You can also explore the rainforest that contains actual tropical plants, some waterfalls, and other beautiful water features. After a day of trying to fight the crowds and breathing in smoke, this is a welcome change. Or you can spend some time gazing at the 20,000 gallon aquarium where the simulated coral reef makes you feel as though you’re at the bottom of the ocean with thousands of fish.
The rooms aren’t as tropical in theme as the rest of the hotel, but they’re still fairly large for guests. With separate showers, Jacuzzi tubs and comfortable beds in the Tower section, you’re certainly getting a luxury experience as only Steve Wynn could provide. Or you could go out the beach-like pool setting that is an oasis in the Vegas strip.
You might want to try the Mirage Cravings Buffet for a taste of everything for everyone. But it’s the entertainment that really offers a taste of everything ñ Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and the Dolphin Habitat are fun for everyone.
Room rates start at $119 a night, but will be much higher during peak seasons.
